Durban’s iconic Florida Road in Morningside will become the first of many urban streets to be lit up by super fast WiFi from MWEB.
Ever wondered what WiFi would look like if we could see it? On Saturday 14 June join MWEB WiFi in celebrating the launch of its first WiFi activated high street in Durban and enjoy a novel WiFi experience, which will demonstrate just this, along Florida Road in Morningside.
Dubbed the MWEB WiFi Florida Road Unwired event, this experience will offer a visual reference of WiFi along Florida Road with a digital surprise allowing you to interact with a series of LED WiFi enabled balloons.
It promises to be an afternoon that will live up to what Durban is known for  - entertainment and fun with great music by popular DJs with a stellar local line-up including DJ Tira,  DJ Cyndo, Coco Loco & Gagasi FM DJ’s.

Vodacom Journalist Of The Year Awards Open For Entries



VODACOM JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR AWARDS MARK 20 YEARS OF DEMOCRACY – AS VODACOM CELEBRATES ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY
Grand prize of R100 000 for top national achiever

As South Africa marks 20 years of democracy, Vodacom is proud to announce this year’s coveted Vodacom Journalist of the Year Awards, as Vodacom itself also celebrates its 20th anniversary.

The awards seek to acknowledge journalists who have shown exceptional commitment to reporting excellence across media platforms, and are recognised as a premier catalyst in rewarding distinction in the ever-more crucial arena of dissemination of news and information. They are recognised as a prestigious career achievement, with the overall winner receiving a R100 000 prize.

Maya Makanjee, Chief Officer for Corporate Affairs at Vodacom Group said: “As Vodacom celebrates 20 years of its mission to empower South Africans to be confidently connected, this year’s theme celebrating 20 years of democracy in South Africa is a great fit for us. Recognising excellence in journalism is a way for us to acknowledge and reward those journalists who are communicating vital news of an extremely high standard.”

Some of South Africa’s finest reporters have been recipients of the prizes in the past. The Vodacom Awards have a proud history of honouring excellence in journalism across a range of categories and have celebrated some of South Africa’s finest journalists. Journalists will be able to enter their best achievements in the following categories for work done in 2013/2014:

•             Print General News
•             Print Feature
•             Radio General News
•             Radio Feature
•             Financial/Economic News
•             Sport
•             CSI/Sustainability

Editors can also nominate their candidates for:

The judging panel will vote on:

Regional category winners will receive R5 000 each, national category winners will receive R10 000 each, with the coveted and sought-after national accolade of Vodacom Journalist of the Year Award winner receiving R100 000.

Mary Papayya will convene a judging panel made up of some of South Africa’s most experienced journalists: Elna Rossouw, Collin Nxumalo, Arthur Goldstuck, Professor Johann de Wet, Joe Thloloe, Ryland Fisher, Patricia McCracken and Megan Rusi.

Papayya said: “The standard of entries last year, across all categories, was incredibly high. We look forward to seeing as many entries as possible this year. From major news organisations to community radio stations, we saw some amazing work and we hope to receive even more entries this year.”


The national award ceremony will be held in Johannesburg on 31 October 2014. “We are looking forward to hosting South Africa’s top achievers in journalism again this year, and being able to showcase the fine work produced by the media in our country,” said Makanjee.

“The interest in last year’s award was massive, and the impact of new media platforms was evident as the event trended on social media. This year we expect even more excitement and we really want to encourage journalists from around the country to enter their best work.

“We’d particularly like to invite journalists from community and smaller radio stations and publications to enter their work. Last year the national radio winner came from Radio 786, a community radio station, for his sterling coverage of the farm workers’ strike in the Western Cape,” said Makanjee.

Entries are open from 2 to 30 June; work submitted must have been produced between 1 May 2013 and 30 May 2014. Entries close at 6pm on 30 June 2014. Journalists and editors nominating their Editor’s Choice candidates can enter online through the Vodacom Journalist of the Year Awards website: journalist.vodacom.co.za

Digital Strategist refers to someone who successfully plans, analyse, recommends and implements multi-channel marketing strategies to meet marketing goals. Social Media Manager is an individual in an organisation who does the monitoring, filtering and measuring social media of a brand, product or corporation. Social media manager’s role is to define an SEO strategy, design a plan to tackle a social media reputation crisis, select what tools and apps will be used to perform tasks, work closely with the client and various departments of the company, to discuss the results and propose strategic improvements: Public Relations, Marketing etc.


Community Manager builds relationships with key members of the community and influencers, moderating conversations and encouraging specific topics, running regular programmes and events, channelling input and response from community. Community managers develop strategies for increasing engagement and conversations, they also show new features and accomplishments of the company.


Fujitsu Business Centric Datacentre event in Sandton

The Fujitsu Business Centric Datacentre event was really an interesting event that took place on the 06th of May 2014 in Sandton, Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel. The aim was to strengthen relationships with customers and promote latest developments and advanced technologies.

There were great speakers lined up like Rodney Smith the Sales Director of Fujitsu. He explained Fujitsu’s vision in line with the human centric intelligent society and the innovations that make the social exists for example the physical, digital business models that are driving innovations and creating new experiences. Uwe Neumeier the Vice President Server Systems he presented about datacentre trends and solutions which helps overcome today’s challenges like the PRIMEQUEST 2000 infrastructure server solutions it set new level of performance and system resilience that are unrivalled on any other x86 system.

He also emphasized Fujitsu’s cloud services, the fact that cloud it is not just a passing phenomenon but it is a paradigm shift set to change the entire ecosystem in accordance with the solutions provided via the cloud offer which is obvious agility, control, speed and cost efficient advantages. Cloud era has created an unprecedented explosion of data and digital information which are essential to generate new business.

Another interesting speaker was Avi Mistry, Enterprise Lead at Intel South Africa he mentioned the most important issue, reducing energy consumption in terms of how green are their IT suppliers, the importance of green washing and informed the delegates about the latest Intel inside Xeon. Fujitsu also contributes to global greenhouse gas reductions as their systems are optimized to provide the best energy efficiency from the mainboards developed and manufactured in Germany through to the selection of components. Everything is providing minimum power consumption and simultaneously the best computer performance. These are efforts to offer economy-wide technological climate solutions as Fujitsu is in the third place with a score of 48 points so Fujitsu’s high score in the IT climate category and is high ranked, that was key to it securing that high overall position.

At the end of the day, The Fujitsu Business Centric Datacentre event was held successfully. The venue was up to standard, the power point presentations were concise and the content as well, visuals were well-placed and they welcomed their delegates with generosity.
