8 handy things to do with your old smartphone

Here are a few ideas from HTC on non-wasteful ways to get rid of your old mobile device:

Sell it to a buyback service
If you need some cash you could sell it to Zwipit www.zwipit.co.za This company will pay for your smartphone, neaten it up and sell it to someone else. The online process is relatively pain free and Zwipit will arrange a courier and assess your device and pay you what they feel it is worth.

Trade it in
Some stores and networks offer great trade-in deals – offering you a discount on your new device in exchange for your phone.

Advertise it on an online classified service
You might just get a better price for your smartphone. You can advertise it on sites like Gumtree or OLX. Just follow these common sense tips along the way: http://blog.gumtree.co.za/common-online-scams-south-africa-avoid

Use it as a hotspot
I really like this idea.  If you constantly need access to the internet use your old smartphone as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot.  You’ll have internet access wherever you go without constantly running down the battery of your primary smartphone.

Turn it into a mobile gaming console
It could possibly be a perfect gaming console for your child. Are you a gamer? Why not turn it into a retro games arcade?

Play some music
Plug the smartphone into a loudspeaker and use apps such as Mix Radio https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mixradio.droid&hl=en or TuneIn Radio https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tunein.player&hl=en to turn it into a makeshift radio. You could also use it for podcasts or load your own music onto it.

Give it away
You could help someone out in need such as a house helper or charity.  Perhaps you know someone who might just need a phone.

Recycle it
Perhaps it is beyond repair or use.  Consider recycling it. There are many e-waste disposal sites around the country.

These tips courtesy of HTC.
The HTC Desire 626 is available at MTN stores nationwide.

Supermodel Jourdan Dunn partners with HTC for new body art inspired design

SUPERMODEL JOURDAN DUNN GETS HTC ‘INK-ED’

Jourdan Dunn

Global fashion icon reveals body art-inspired design for HTC INK M9 Limited Edition campaign

HTC, a global leader in innovation and design, unveiled its latest campaign HTC INK. Working in collaboration with worldwide fashion icon and supermodel Jourdan Dunn, and tapping into the fashion world’s passion for body art, HTC INK will see bespoke celebrity body art designs engraved onto a limited run of HTC’s premium HTC One M9 handsets.

A ground-breaking star of international high fashion runways, advertising campaigns and magazines, with an approachable street style and a personal love of body art, Jourdan is the ideal choice to launch this style-led Limited Edition campaign, which capitalises on the global trend for ‘ink’, in both permanent and temporary forms.

With the look and feel of the HTC One M9 inspired by the artistry of high-end fine jewellers, coming in a number of brushed-metal, two tone finishes, Jourdan’s HTC INK design will replicate this in the form of temporary metallic body art. Created by Cally-Jo Pothecary, who was responsible for Rihanna’s henna-style hand inking, it will be engraved onto the back of a series of Limited Edition HTC One M9 handsets.

On her appointment as HTC INK’s first global ambassador, Jourdan said: “My experience in the world of fashion means that I have a passion for creativity and expressing personal style. The HTC INK campaign seemed like a fun way for me to showcase the inspiration behind my own body art and share my love of design.  I’m proud to be part of HTC’s campaign and am excited to see people around the world with my creation on their HTC One M9.”
HTC’s CEO Cher Wang said: “Cleverly executed and unique body art is as much an expression of your style and personality as your outfit, haircut or your smartphone. No brand has yet tapped into the potential of body art and it seemed a natural fit for HTC’s commitment to promote brilliant design and individual expression. With Jourdan Dunn working alongside us, we will continue to lead the industry in setting trends and making technology more human and individualistic.”

About HTC One M9
The newest flagship in the globally acclaimed HTC One family, the HTC One M9 is HTC’s most personal, beautiful and powerful smartphone yet. A classic yet timeless celebration of beauty and elegance, it combines high style, personalisation and performance and, with a raft of high end features, is perfectly designed for those who aspire to a brilliant life.

Interpreting Jourdan Dunn’s HTC INK design
Jourdan worked with celebrity ‘ink-er’ Cally Jo Pothecary to come up with an image that encapsulated her feelings about a new direction in her life, her excitement over upcoming creative projects, and being able to express her individual style through her partnership with HTC.

The open hand and eye symbolise the need for protection and strength, whilst still being open and approachable in personality and style. The natural leaf-elements and patterns around the outside of each visual reflect the growth in creativity that she is feeling at this time, whilst the sun and moon together indicate balance and harmony in her character.

Now you can draw cash from the ATM using the FNB App no card required

FNB today announced that the cardless cash withdrawal feature is available on the latest version* of the FNB Banking App. The feature allows customers to withdraw money at an ATM without using their bank cards.

This launch to the 1.2million active devices that currently make use of the FNB Banking App comes shortly after FNB announced that R2 billion has been withdrawn through cardless cash withdrawals on cellphone banking.

Giuseppe Virgillito, Head of Banking App at FNB Digital Banking says the rollout to the App was the logical next step.

“Enhancement of the FNB Banking App has always been driven by innovative banking solutions and customer demand. Our latest results show a 67% increase in App transaction volumes. This comes as a result of increased usage across the spectrum of App features as well as more customers that are migrating to the App for their digital banking needs.”

Over the past year, the FNB Banking App has been enhanced to include features such as lost or stolen card cancellation, opening of new accounts and ordering of new cards. Use of these features continues to see growth.

Whilst cancelling a cheque card would ordinarily imply that the customer would not have the tool to access their cash whilst waiting for a new card, cardless cash withdrawal serves as a complimentary feature ensuring that a customer can gain access to cash whenever needed.

“Irrespective of the reason for not having a card with you, your mobile devices are unlikely to be more than an arm’s length away. Cardless and cashless features on digital channels ensure simplified banking and 24/7 access to accounts, no matter what the circumstances,” concludes Virgillito.

*The latest version of the FNB Banking App is available from Apple, Android, Windows, and Blackberry app stores.

To use Cardless cash withdrawals on the FNB Banking App:
·         Launch the FNB Banking App
·         Select Cardless Cash Withdrawals
·         Enter your FNB online banking password
·         Follow the prompted steps
·         Once the temporary ATM PIN has been received the money can be withdrawn from any FNB ATM

In collaboration with top automotive design studio Italdesign Giugiaro, LG has contributed several of its products and technologies for the Gea concept car.

LG has supplied all in-car displays for the Gea. Vodacom Business BYOD security solution - BBM Recruitment Competition

Vodacom Business launches BYOD security solution

Bring Your Own Device, or BYOD, is on the rise.  Employees are increasingly using their own smartphones, tablets, and other devices for work. It’s great for employees to be able to use the device that they prefer and can help companies increase productivity and reduce costs, but it can be a major challenge when it comes to managing company network security. Vodacom Business has now stepped in with a new solution which gives IT security managers the tools needed to safely bring BYOD under control.

Vodacom Secure Device Manager is a new Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution developed by Vodacom Business. This solution provides administration functionality for businesses to remotely manage mobile devices and enforce security policies, giving employees secure access to corporate data. The tool can be used for both company-owned and employee-owned devices across the business.

Chris Ross, Managing Executive of Products and Services at Vodacom Business said:

“With around 95% of employees stating that they use at least one personal device for work, BYOD is a reality that company IT security managers simply can’t ignore.

“Although the ability to allow staff to work at any time, from anywhere and on any device provides real business benefits, it also brings significant risks. To ensure that information does not end up in the wrong hands, it’s imperative that companies put security measures in place.”

Vodacom Secure Device Manager is a solution that enables companies to manage all devices using company resources through an internet-based console. Once devices have been added, companies can maintain the security of their data and applications, even if a device is lost or stolen. This is done by ensuring that only authorized and compliant devices have access to the company network, and by locking down and wiping the data from any lost or stolen devices.

Vodacom Secure Device Manager also enables companies to remotely monitor the health of smart devices and run diagnostics to identify issues and fix problems as efficiently as possible. On top of this, the service allows the viewing of application inventory and data against thresholds in order to simplify the management mobile assets and inventory. Updating or adding new policies, settings, certificates, applications, and software can also all now be managed wirelessly via the internet using Vodacom Business’ MDM solution.

“The web-based console gives companies the ability to control who can access company information and applications via their own smart devices, thereby protecting vital information and helping companies to comply with regulations such as the impending POPI Act,” adds Ross.

Vodacom Secure Device Manager works across key platforms including iOS, Android and Windows Mobile devices. It’s a highly scalable solution designed to support as many or as few devices as needed, making it suitable for use by small businesses as well as large organisations and government departments.

“Companies will also have access to a dedicated Vodacom Business support team to provide the kind of round-the-clock support that our customers have come to expect from us,” adds Ross.

Review of CMAD by Cath Jenkin

Being a community manager can sometimes feel like a lonely job. When you’re dealing with client queries, feedback requirements, complaints, compliments and trying to get that beloved escalation matrix well, escalating…some days can feel like a train ride with no tracks.

But then along comes the 24-hour CMAD celebrations and the webcasts we participated in, and that reminds all of us that, despite feeling lonely some days, we’re actually on the steam train together.

Perhaps the best part of participating in the webcast with Nazareen Ebrahim, Kirsty Bisset, Samantha Perry and Fred Felton (link-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7O9S_4ZUn5A&index=1&list=LLKnh-tz4OO6JLP5A6llKL3w) was the reminders that we’ve all got our tickets for this train ride and, so often, the challenges faced by us in our daily work, are faced by all of us, across the globe.

As we discussed the definitions and strategies for coping with a social media crisis, it’s evident that the importance of a crisis communications strategy is unparalleled. As Kirsty Bisset said, it’s important to go through the “What ifs” before they happen, so that internal response and action plans are well coordinated long before a crisis hits. As Samantha Perry pointed out too, within a crisis situation, it’s important that the right people are vested with the ability to speak on behalf of a company or brand and the importance of having a CEO or company leader come to the fore in times of crisis is a reassuring mechanism that helps to calm a client panic or outrage. Nazareen Ebrahim related a few poignant examples of how this has come into play, citing Tony Fernandez’ online responses when the AirAsia aeroplane went down in late 2014.

I’m certain that lessons learnt and shared during our session were well received and, judging by the tweets we read and online comments, it’s great to know that our webcast proved useful for Community Managers out there! Thanks to MyCommunityManager for having us!
