4 ways to cut your mobile data costs

Mobile data is expensive, but there are many ways to reduce the amount of data you use
without compromising on your Android smartphone experience. Alcatel suggests a few tweaks and tips that will help you stretch your bundle further:

1. Use less data with Chrome’s Data Saver

With Chrome’s Data Saver, less data is downloaded to your device because Google’s servers compress websites for you. Not only can this cut down on data usage, it can also allow you to load web pages faster when you have a slow connection.
On your Android phone, open the Chrome app, tap ‘more settings’ and then tap ‘data saver’ under
‘advanced’. Switch the setting on; you can look at ‘data usage breakdown’ under ‘data saver’ to see a list of the sites you've visited and how much data you've saved.

2. Check that you don’t have apps draining your data in the background

Some apps may be running data services in the background, even when you are not using them. For
example, they could be downloading updated information, syncing data or tracking your location. Look at ‘data usage’ in the Android settings menu, and you may be shocked by how much data some apps are quietly consuming. In particular, look at background data usage, and tap on ‘restrict app background data’ if it’s not an app you use all the time.

3. Go ‘lite’ with some of your favourite apps

The developers of many of your favourite apps and services have created lightweight versions of their apps, designed to consume less data as well as to require less storage space and run better on older and slower devices.
Sometimes you might need to sacrifice a few features when you use the ‘lite’ version of an app, but for many people, it’s a worthwhile trade‐off for more efficient data usage. Some examples include YouTube Go, Google Go, Skype Lite, Facebook Messenger Lite and Twitter Lite.

4. Navigate offline with Google Maps and download media

Navigation with Google Maps can chew up a significant amount of data. You can save an area from
Google Maps to your phone or tablet when you have access to a Wi‐Fi network and use it when you're offline. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app and click download.
Where apps like Netflix, Google Play or Spotify allow it, why not download your media when you have Wi‐Fi access rather than streaming it using mobile data? This can enable you to have your entertainment at your fingertips, without blowing your bundle.

This December Samsung Has You Covered

Holiday season is here and wherever you plan to go for your summer vacation, you want your holiday to run smoothly and free from worry.

Therefore, why not consider to download Waze or an equivalent map service from the app store, to ensure you find your destination with ease. Perhaps you want to consider loading the latest weather app, to be forewarned of the weather conditions for your holiday. You may even have obtained a calendar of the most exciting events in the region you are travelling to.

However, all this will be in vain if something happens to your mobile device and you find yourself far from home, requiring repairs. Unless of course, it is a Samsung product, as service assistance for all devices and appliances are available during holidays - via multiple channels - across the country.

Should you be staying in one of the major metropolitan areas, you will be able to make use of Samsung’s cyber-booking facility to quickly book the repair in advance. Cyber-booking is designed to expedite faster and more effective service and is available across the Samsung customer service plazas in Johannesburg, Midrand, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.

“By using this facility, you provide the service centre with early notification, enabling it to ensure that the relevant parts or spares are in stock by the time you bring the defective product in. This means that the repair, if possible, should be done within the hour, so you don’t waste half your holiday waiting around for your device to be fixed,” says Richard Chetty, Director for SSA Service at Samsung South Africa.

He adds that if you are not near one of the major cities, you may still visit the Samsung website and seek out the service locations nearest to you.

Travel without concerns knowing that issues with any of your devices can easily be dealt with. But what do you do if, for example, your fridge experiences problems while you are away? You certainly don’t want to come home to a freezer full of spoilt food.

The answer is quite simple, explains Chetty. “Ensure that your house-sitter or emergency contact has the details for Samsung support channels, along with the warranty details for your Samsung appliances. They can then contact us for help on 0860 726 786.”

There are a number of options to choose from. They could utilise Samsung’s Online Chat service, where experts are available to talk the customer through a range of troubleshooting options. If this service could not assist in resolving the problem, the agent will then contact the service centre number to log a call for the customer, in order to provide Samsung’s in-home service. These repairs will be done free of charge, as long as the product is still within its warranty.

“Ultimately, Samsung is committed to breaking down barriers and deliver on our clients’ requirements as speedily as possible, even if they are not at home when these requirements need to be met. We have a committed service infrastructure in SA, backed up by multiple support channels. These include phone, e-mail, live chat, remote service and cyber service. This means that you are able to relax on the beach, comfortable in the knowledge that Samsung will provide the safety net for repairs on all your appliances and devices,” concludes Chetty.

Vodacom superfast 4G is a first for SA

Vodacom recently unveiled the next development in 4G technology, capable of downloading an entire 1Gb movie in less than a minute. This is the first time that this has been achieved on a live mobile network in South Africa using a smartphone, and shows the potential of mobile technology to supply the country’s broadband needs into the future.

During the test, which was conducted directly on a mobile handset and used carrier aggregation technology, download speeds of 270 Mbit/s were achieved. At this speed an entire music album could be downloaded in 10 seconds. This is approximately four times faster than the fastest speed achieved with LTE technology on Vodacom’s network.

Speaking about this test, Vodacom Group’s Chief Technology Officer Andries Delport said:

“Vodacom prides itself on innovation and being the first to bring new developments to South Africa, and this next step in 4G technology gives an idea of just how far mobile technology has evolved.”

These trials follow the recent completion of a multi-billion rand six year-long radio network renewal programme which has seen every single Vodacom base station in South Africa replaced with new equipment.

Delport said:

“We’ve just completed the longest and probably the most complex engineering project in Vodacom’s history which involved switching out the equipment at every single site across the country. This new equipment means that all of our base stations are 4G ready, meaning that Vodacom is ideally positioned to support Government’s broadband objectives. We’re looking forward to rolling this higher speed technology out as soon as additional spectrum becomes available.

“In addition to this, the new equipment is more easily configured to handle future upgrades and is better for the environment, with reduced energy consumption and a smaller footprint compared to the old technology. Thanks to this project, Vodacom’s South African network is amongst the most advanced in the world.”

The upgrade programme, which began in Mpumalanga in June 2008, was completed on 15 September 2014 in the Free State and consisted of swapping out the equipment in over 10 000 base stations. The net effect of this investment project is that Vodacom customers will have an improved network experience with faster data speeds, more stability and fewer dropped calls.

Delport concluded:

“The radio network swap project is about much more than superfast speeds. We’ve also been investing heavily to make sure that we have the capacity to handle the massive growth in call and particularly data volumes in South Africa. Broadband access is one of the keys to economic development and thanks to this project we’re ready and able to play our part.”

Entries for 2014 International App Star Challenge Now Open

Vodacom puts SA app developers on to the international stage

Entries for the 2014 international App Star Challenge competition are now open. This is a chance for South Africa’s upcoming and established app developers to showcase their talents locally, with the winners going forward to compete on the international stage against app developers from Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and India.

The two categories in the South African leg of the competition are ‘upcoming’ and ‘established’. An ‘established’ developer or company is one that meets the following criteria: more than 10 employees, established before 15 Jan 2013 and has 50,000+ combined downloads of all their apps in popular app stores. An ‘upcoming’ developer or company is one that doesn’t meet the criteria for the ‘established’ developer.

The applicable platforms for this competition are Android, J2ME, Windows Phone 8, iOS and BlackBerry. The first prize at this stage of the competition is R20 000 for the winners in each category and a trip to India to participate in the International leg of the competition. Further prizes can then be won at the international competition, including a trip to the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

App developers should submit their entries for the local contest via www.vodacomappstar.com. All entries must be submitted by 15 November 2014.

Ashraff Paruk, Managing Executive of Digital Services at Vodacom said:

“The Vodacom App Star Challenge was first launched in 2012. We’ve seen some incredibly high quality, innovative apps taking top honours in the past years and we’re looking forward to another round. It’s time for local developers to step up and demonstrate their skills – I want to be able to showcase South Africa’s ingenuity and make sure that our country comes out on top at the international final.”

Speaking about the ethos behind the competition, Paruk said:

“The mobile industry is changing and operators like Vodacom need to embrace the app economy and over the top players. It’s a genuine honour to be able to play a part in incubating new businesses and developing budding entrepreneurs. By working with these developers we’re helping to support the economy, to stimulate new services for our customers, and ultimately to position our business for the future. It’s most definitely a win-win situation.”

The International leg of the competition takes place in Bangalore, India on 15 January 2015. The first prize winners in each category of the international round will win an all-expenses paid trip to the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona. The second prize winners in both the established and upcoming category will each receive devices and Amazon gift vouchers worth US$ 5000.

Vodacom rolls out Fibre to Business - FNB has Xbox One For You - Altech launches Node

Vodacom rolls out Fibre To The Business

Vodacom Business announced the launch of Fibre To The Business (FTTB) services in South Africa. The initial rollout phase of Vodacom’s new Broadband Connect Fibre service sees broadband connectivity of up to 100Mbit/s coming to selected business parks in Gauteng, Cape Town, and Durban. This new service means that businesses of all sizes that operate out of business parks will have access to high speed and high capacity data connections. This opens up a range of services to drive cost savings, improve efficiencies and increase competitiveness.

Broadband Connect Fibre uses the latest Passive Optical Network (PON) technology to give an unparalleled experience. With this new service, businesses will be able to access rich content experiences via the Internet that were previously only available to large corporate customers. These services include video collaboration, voice over internet protocol (VoIP), Hosted PBX, Office365, Cloud Backup and other data applications.

Since 2008, Vodacom has spent more than R2 billion investing in fibre transmission which connects its more than 10,000 cellular base stations and now forms the backbone of this new FTTB service.

“Most people don’t realise it, but underneath every mobile network is a high speed fixed network connecting the base stations. We’ve invested billions of rands in building our fibre optic network, meaning that we now have the critical mass to offer customers across South Africa access to the latest technology including FTTB,” said Vuyani Jarana, Chief Officer for Vodacom Business.

“Our new FTTB service paves the way for true cloud and other next generation services while opening the door to a new level of efficiency, mobility and cost savings,” added Jarana.

Vodacom Business’ Broadband Connect Fibre service provides SMEs with bundled uncapped internet access, a router and optional fixed-line VoIP which delivers as much as 30% savings on phone calls. Rapid deployment including the connecting and upgrading of fibre cables is part of the service, and all installation costs are covered by Vodacom. The plans, which are tailored to meet the needs of all sizes of business, offer a range of connection speeds from 5Mbit/s to 100Mbit/s.
Importantly, as part of its roll out plan, Vodacom will in the future be offering customers the option of installing additional equipment in their premises to, in effect, set up a dedicated mini mobile base station. This equipment, which uses the fibre connection to route cellphone traffic back into the network, will give the best possible mobile signal and eliminate any troublesome coverage spots in the office.
“A cornerstone of Vodacom’s Ready Business ethos is that our customers should have the fastest, most reliable connection,” says Jarana. “With the most extensive network across South Africa and proven reliability, we are positioned to offer world class broadband solutions that give SMEs and office park managers a clear business advantage.”

Discussing the rollout plans from here, Jarana said:

“We’re particularly excited about our acquisition of Neotel and what this will mean for the speed at which we can rollout broadband services. If given regulatory approval, we’ll be able to add Neotel’s 22,000 km of fibre to our existing network and then fast-track the provision of high speed connectivity not only for businesses but also for homes across South Africa. By doing this, we’ll be in the best possible position to support Government’s Broadband 2020 objectives.”

Jarana shared some additional insight into Vodacom Business’ FTTB strategy in an interview with Aki Anastasiou, visithttp://youtu.be/neBT4G-CSOY to view the interview.

Altech launches Node: A world-first in entertainment technology and smart home solutions

Allied Technologies Limited (Altech) announced the launch of Altech Node, the world’s first fully converged home gateway console, offering the latest in movie entertainment, TV series, sports and business content, Internet access, and wireless smart home solutions.
Altech Node gives immediate access to more than 700 hours of entertainment without any buffering, with 10% to 20% of movies and TV shows updated monthly as older content is replaced with the latest and greatest releases. And through Node compatible accessories, it creates a smart home environment that can be directly controlled from the television screen.
According to Craig Venter, Group Executive Altron TMT / Chief Executive Officer: Altech, Node is like a DVD store in your home.
“At any time viewers can choose from a selection of hundreds of blockbuster movies on transactional video on demand – TVOD, in full 1080p High Definition, and 400 recent movies on subscription video on demand – SVOD. And what is especially brilliant about the way we have set up the Node, is that the content is streamed, and regularly updated, via satellite to the Node’s internal 1TB hard drive, so viewers don’t pay for massive Internet downloads and can access content literally the moment they decide to view it, with no delays and no buffering.”
Node maintains a carousel library of content on its hard drive, the majority of which can be accessed as part of the monthly subscription fee of R299. Node incorporates a once-off device cost of R3 499, unless customers opt to purchase the Node over a 24-month period at approximately R190 per month, depending on the selected data bundle. Free installation is included in the cost. Added to this is the fact that customers are not tied into long term contracts.

The latest blockbuster movie releases can be viewed for R25 and enjoyed for unlimited viewing over a 48 hour period. With a wide range of subscription video-on-demand titles, including movies and series, customers will be spoilt for choice. Sports fans and followers of business news and current affairs can catch up on the latest developments through up-to-date highlights packages.
Node is also unique in that it is an instant e-commerce platform that allows users to buy data, airtime and pre-paid electricity, and pay for municipal and utility services such as Eskom or Telkom – all from the comfort of their home and without the use of a computer.
In addition to the Node’s entertainment capabilities is its smart TV and smart home functionality that enables users to download Android apps, access the Internet and email, and control home appliances using Node branded Smart Plugs.
“In today’s high security conscious world the wireless camera and motion sensor capabilities of the Node are a tremendous value-add. With just one or two clicks of a button on the Node’s remote control, you are able to view up to four Node video cameras wirelessly on your TV screen or via another connected access device such as an iPad or cell phone,” says Venter.
“Node is much more than video on demand. It is an entertainment hub, a streaming server, a Wi-Fi hotspot, an e-commerce platform, a home automation and energy management system, a home security system, and a telephone and videophone, all in one and completely integrated. It is the most sophisticated home gateway in the world and is a true reflection of Altech’s mission to provide its customers with value-added products, services and solutions through the convergence of Telecommunications, Multi-media and Information Technology,” adds Venter.
“Our advertising payoff line for Node is: ‘One day we’ll wonder what we ever did without it’. Inherent in that statement is the notion that nothing like it has gone before, and that’s because nothing has,” concludes Venter.
Available at:
Altech Autopage Cellular, Cell C, Dion Wired, Game, HiFi Corporation, Hirsch’s, Incredible Connection, JetMart, Makro, Pick ‘n Pay Hyper and other leading retailers.
Other key features of the Node include:
*        Node’s YouTube functionality that allows viewers to set up their own video playlists using another device, such as a smartphone, and queuing them to play on their TV;
*        Node’s built-in media player, MyMedia, which allows content to be played off other devices, such as the Altech Node branded and packaged USB flash drive, which enables users to also add and view their favourite home videos and holiday photos on their TV.
*        Node’s wireless Internet functionality turns it into a Wi-Fi hotspot and allows for up to 5 devices – the TV, computer, smartphone and tablet – to be connected simultaneously to stream content to these devices. No more fighting over which movie or TV series to watch!
*        Users can download Android apps for use on the Node, such as Internet radio streaming. For the kids there is the added advantage of access to hundreds of games to keep them entertained for hours.
*        Node offers Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony, allowing for two handsets and almost free on-net calling. Users can also videoconference via the Node.
*        Node is a home automation and energy management device. Using ZigBee peripheral devices, users can control house lights and switch on appliances such as geysers, either via the TV or remotely with a smartphone.
*        Node is secure, with state-of-the art encryption for movie payments, e-commerce and interfacing with other devices.
*        Node is easy to install. Users can do it themselves, even with the most rudimentary technical skills, and install their own automation and security equipment. And Node comes standard with an 80cm satellite dish – the new standard for Africa.
*        Node is easy to use. It has no buttons on its front face but comes with a remote control with an interface on each side – one being a QWERTY keyboard. And its RF remote control means line-of-sight isn’t necessary when using it. Users can also turn their smartphones into remote controls. Node’s customisable carousel-style navigation layout is easy to master. It also features one HDMI out port, two HDMI in ports to switch multiple HDMI ports into your TV, and an Ethernet connector and Wi-Fi for connectivity.
*        Node is extremely cost effective to operate and should users utilise the YouTube function extensively and require more cellular data, they can immediately top up their data via the Altech Node. Cellular pre-paid airtime can also be purchased through the Node.
More information on the Altech Node can be found at: www.node.co.za or visit Node on Twitter (@AltechNode); Facebook and YouTube.

Virgin Mobile Crowdsourcing Campaign For Musician John Newman

Virgin Mobile South Africa has released an alternative and fun local fan music video for John Newman’s smash hit ‘Love Me Again’.

Created from footage shot in a Virgin Mobile video booth during the British artist’s recent tour to Cape Town and Johannesburg, it features local fans lip-synching and dancing their way passionately through the song.

John Newman – who shot to fame in 2012 as the voice of Rudimental’s number one hit-single ‘Feel the Love’ – is emerging as one of the iconic voices of his generation. The 23-year old British singer-songwriter’s soulful tones wowed the crowds at both South African venues.

“Partnering with Seed Experiences as a sponsor of the John Newman tour was an exciting step for us,” notes Chief Operations Officer for Virgin Mobile SA, Jason Hair, “part of the reinvigoration of our brand involves close associations with live music – and John Newman’s shows were absolutely fantastic.”

“South Africans have an incredible passion for music, across various genres and cultures. Through music, we’re able to reflect both our individuality, and also our unity,” he adds.

“The Virgin brand has always been slightly different from the established status quo – so we feel the association with music is a perfect fit.  Virgin Mobile will support other local and international acts this year.

The music video stars a total of 278 South African fans. The raw footage, which was 10 hours long, was skilfully edited into the final four-minute cut to capture the mood of the two evenings.

John Newman interacted with local fans at the Cape Town and Jo’burg events – as Virgin Mobile gave away VIP tickets to lucky winners via social media, which included a backstage meet and greet for one lucky couple.

The Virgin Mobile team thanks all the South African fans for “creating a unique memento of the performances through interaction with our brand, and helping us kick off Virgin Mobile’s involvement with music in such style.”
